Abstract:

Laminar flow in flat plate heat exchangers may be subjected to asymmetric, nonuniform thermal conditions due to different environments in adjacent passages. The existing heat transfer solutions and methods are summarized and a general method is proposed for determining the temperature distribution in the flow between parallel plates with an arbitrary initial condition, arbitrary heat flux distribution along one plate and an arbitrary temperature distribution along the other plate. The method is applied for a parabolic velocity profile and the results are presented in terms of convolution integrals which require the Laplace inversion of functions determined from the specific boundary conditions selected by the user.
