Abstract:

An evaluation of the high pressure propulsion turbine, foremast and amplidyne motor-generator units of the USS CAMDEN AOE-2 was made during preliminary acceptance trials. Modifications by the shipyard to stiffen the HP turbine bearing foundation in the fore and aft direction were ineffective. Recommended modifications are made for effective fore and aft stiffening. Vibration levels measured on the foremast in the longitudinal and athwartship directions were significantly less than those observed during prior Builders Trials with approximately the same ship loading and sea state. No radar operational problems were encountered during the tests and the structural modification to the mast is considered to be satisfactory. The vibration levels measured on the amplidyne units due to the natural frequencies of the foundations are not considered excessive. Author
