Abstract:

A young female rough-tooth porpoise of species Steno bredanensis participated actively in 36 training sessions varying in length from a few minutes to half an hour. Two or three sessions were held per day, several days per week, in February and March 1966. By session 15, the animal clearly understood, and reacted accordingly to, the criterion that only a new, original behavior would be rewarded. By the end of the experiment, she reacted properly to the second criterion, namely, that only one new behavior per session would be rewarded. Sixteen distinct behaviors were observed, some of which had never been seen before by the trainers. Author
