Abstract:

For the MEL Ocean Pressure Laboratory, a study was made of the type of an ocean environment needed and its composition. It is recommended that a natural sea-water environment be used but modified to the extent of removal of most biological life and suspended matter, particularly silicon. A temperature of 3.24 C and salinity of 34.71 parts per thousand were found to represent an overall average ocean condition. Also, for certain experiments, a detailed average distribution of temperature and salinity versus depth is given. Dissolved gases, oxygen, nitrogen, total carbon dioxide system, and pH were analyzed as to their importance. The recommendation was made that if the gases considered were important, the environment be saturated with the particular gas at a standard temperature and salinity in order to ensure a uniform reproduction from experiment to experiment.
