SURVEY OF RESEARCH ON TYPOGRAPHICAL EFFECTIVENESS.
Abstract:
Research on the effects of typographical and environmental variables on effectiveness of printed materials is surveyed. Effectiveness is defined as ease and accuracy of reading words, phrases, connected text, and numerals in context. Variables considered are 1 type style or design 2 interactions of charcter size, length of line, and interlinear spacing 3 form of type 4 mixtures of different forms, styles, and compositions 5 size of margins and inter-column spaces 6 distance to reader 7 levels of illumination 8 background vs. character surface reflectances 9 background vs. character colors 10 curvature of surface 11 angular alignment of printed surface to line of sight 12 angular alignment of lines of type to line of sight 13 vibration 14 prediction and measurement of comprehensibility.
