PRODUCTION ENGINEERING MEASURE FOR SUBMINIATURE, HIGH RELIABILITY CERAMIC CAPACITORS.
Abstract:
Capacitors using an upset lead, which offers economic advantages and performance improvements over the present clip lead, were made and submitted to the Quality Control Lab for process improvement tests during the quarter. Molding compound tests conducted during the quarter did not result in meaningful data because of other variables that are related to the glaze. Therefore, effort was placed on improving our present 760 ON glaze. Parts were made with 760 OQ glaze which is different in glass composition from the 760 ON glaze and tested. Two refinements of the 760 OQ glaze, 760 OY and 760 OZ, were made and tested. The 760 OZ glaze did not offer any advantages over the 760 OQ glaze and was dropped from further consideration. Capacitors made with the 760 OQ and 760 OY are still on test. Several gold pastes were tried as electrode materials during the quarter. Capacitors fabricated with two of these materials are now on test. Parts made with GP-1 and 760 OQ glaze have passed four groups of the process improvement test and have gone 305 hours on life without any failures. Two modifications of our present silvering solution and a different applicating technique have been successful in reducing the cracks in the silver but not successful in controlling the thickness of the silver.
