Abstract:

Fluorosulfuric acid was studied in considerable detail. Some of the more important conclusions were 1 Fluorosulfuric acid is more acidic than sulfuric acid and it is, therefore, the most highly acidic solvent that has been studied. 2 The autoprotolysis ions H2SO3F and SO3F- conduct by a proton-transfer mechanism. 3 Iodine can be oxidized in this solvent to the hitherto unknown I2 ion which gives the blue color formerly attributed to I, which does not appear to be stable. 4 Phenol and anisole protonate on the aromatic ring and not on oxygen. A similar study of the HF solvent system was initiated. The behavior of the acid SbF5 was studied in some detail and evidence was obtained for the formation of the new dimeric ion Sb2F11. This work has considerably extended knowledge of highly acidic non-aqueous media and has shown the importance of these solvents in the study of new species, particularly positive ions, that are unstable in more basic media.
