SELF-LUBRICATING MATERIALS.
Abstract:
The report covers the work done toward developing a self-lubricating bearing material. This bearing material was of the thermosetting resin, lubricant filled, type. Formulations consisting of an amine cured epoxy resin filled with various dry lubricants at various concentration levels were evaluated by means of a modified Shell Four Ball Wear Test and the Falex Wear Test. The best formulations consisted of the epoxy resin filled with 50-70 of a mixture of molybdenum disulphide, antimony trioxide and dibasic lead phosphite. These materials are effective under the following tentative conditions maximum load 4000 psi, maximum speed 50 ftminute, temperature range of 80 to 300 F. The limiting pressure velocity value is 15,000 - 20,000. Under low load, low speed conditions coefficient of frictions of 0.05-0.10 and a wear rate of 0.1 mghr was obtained. Generally as load and speed increase friction and wear rate also increases. Author
