Abstract:

An available experimental compression tester was automated to attain reproducible impact velocities. The tester was a gas-operated, block-block type. Reproducibility of velocity was attained to within 5. An SR-4 gaged weight-bar was used as the load sensor for the tests. No way was found to predict the magnitude of the load that would be applied to the columns and it was found that the load capacity of the sensor could be easily exceeded. Preliminary evaluations were conducted on the applicability of optical methods to the measurement of deformations. A design for a proposed bar-type compression tester is described. The proposed tester was designed to meet the following specifications 1 Cause a 25-pound projectile to attain impact velocities to 1760 inches per second 100 miles per hour. 2 Be capable of applying loads to 70,000 pounds at rates ranging from 1 to 10 inches perminute.
