Abstract:

Free substitution algebras are defined, and their basic properties are derived using the standard techniques of universal algebra. The theory is applied to give a purely algebraic definition of block diagrams andor functional nets. A heuristic demonstration is given showing the identify of the present treatment of diagrams with the more geometric approach via labeled graphs. Author
