NANOSECOND PULSE BREAKDOWN IN GASES.

Abstract:

It is shown analytically that under certain conditions pulsed dc and pulsed microwave breakdown are directly comparable. A pulsed dc experimental system to measure breakdown over a wide range of applied voltage, gas pressure and gap distance has been used to measure formative time in the different gases. For those gases where sufficient basic data are available comparison of theoretical and experimental results show good agreement. Breakdown measurements in air have been used to calculate breakdown field strengths as a function of altitude and frequency for pulse lengths of 1 to 100 nanoseconds. Author
