A METHOD OF SILVER PLATING GLASS BEADS.
Abstract:
A chemical method is described for plating glass beads with a uniform coat of silver. The object of this work was to develop a technique of plating beads uniformly with a minimum of 6 by weight of silver while maintaining their smooth spherical shape. The method is based on the reduction of silver from an ammoniacal silver nitrate solution. Results using formaldehyde and sodium potassium tartrate as reducing agents are discussed. It is concluded that this chemical method may be used to plate glass beads with a uniform coat of silver. By this procedure, using sodium potassium tartrate, a smooth coat giving up to 7 silver by weight on beads having a mass median diameter of 32 microns can be obtained. Author
