Abstract:

A VLFLF synthesizer was constructed and tested in order to demonstrate the feasibility of using microelectronic digital and analog circuitry in complex electronic systems. The use of thin film circuitry instead of discrete components provided a significant increase in reliability. An MTBF of 1800 hours has been conservatively calculated for the VLFLF synthesizer. An outstanding feature of the VLFLF synthesizer is that there are no circuit adjustments. Another notable feature is that the modules can be easily checked and replaced if necessary. It is interesting to compare the relative volumes of circuitry, filters, and packaging in the synthesizer. The relative volumes are circuitry 8, filters 35, and packaging 57.
