Abstract:

The figures or diagrams resulting on describing the path of a particle undergoing the motion of a damped double pendulum were derived by using an IBM-7044 computer and a Stromberg-Carlson 4020 printer-plotter. The starting point and end point data of each line segment were input to the 4020 on a magnetic tape produced by the 7044 from a program written in Fortran IV. The results compared well with those of W. B. Hales Recording Lissajous Figures, J. Accoust. Soc. Am., 16 1945 137-146. The experiment demonstrates the use of computing machines and simple programming techniques to illustrate physical properties.
