INVESTIGATION OF NEW CONCEPTS FOR OPTICAL MIXING,
Abstract:
The report covers a research program conducted to investigate theoretically new concepts for mixing optical signals to determine which methods warrant experimental development. Particular emphasis is placed on exploring techniques that would be 1 useful for very high difference frequencies i.e., above 50 Gc and 2 efficient mixers of weak optical signals. The major topics in the report are 1 a discussion of generalized figures-of-merit for photodevices 2 description and analysis of optical mixers using photoelectric emission 3 description and analysis of optical mixing in semiconductors and 4 a discussion of mixing in insulating crystals. The most extensive new analysis presented concerns distributed-emission phototubes and mixing in semiconductors. Author
