Abstract:

Work done on the memory system of the octopus is reported. Aspects considered include 1 analysis of the functions of the pairs of centres concerned with the signals of results 2 effects of hunger and taste of food 3 comparison of effects of removing vertical and median superior frontal lobes 4 electron-microscopy of the lobes 5 connections with the tactile memory system 6 the mechanism of poisoning, eating and digestion 7 effects of large amounts of food on behavior 8 conduction velocities of nerve fibers of different diameters 9 effect of lesions in the dorsal basal lobe 10 function of the peduncle lobe 11 delayed responses and short term memory and 12 comparison with other animals.
