Abstract:

An attempt is made to determine if a reported operational failure of the helicopter rescue basket now in use was a design defect which could affect the safety of future rescue operations. The tests revealed some design weaknesses which caused premature failure of the basket bail. The report includes recommended design modifications necessary to provide a fix for existing rescue baskets and a proposed modification for future production of the baskets.
