COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH BEHAVIOR OF A FINE-GRAINED GRAPHITE AS A FUNCTION OF SPECIMEN GEOMETRY AND LOADING RATE,
Abstract:
Ultimate compressive strength data were determined for a fine-grained graphite at room temperature. Solid cylindrical specimens of various lengths were loaded at constant deformation rates to examine the effect of specimen geometry on the ultimate strength. For slenderness ratios from 4 to 20, the strength variation was only a few percent for specimens of constant diameter. To investigate loading rate effects, specimens of constant diameter and length were fractured in time periods ranging from about 160 microseconds to 260 seconds.
