COORDINATION POLYMERS AS POSSIBLE ORGANIC SEMICONDUCTORS.
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to prepare organometallic coordination polymers that might prove of value as semiconductors. Arguments proposed earlier suggested that organic semiconductors could be useful only if they are a completely conjugated b are obtained as single crystals. These conditions can be met, in principle at least, by preparing coordination polymers of suitable transition metals with aromatic ligands, permitting through-conjugation by d pi p pi bonding between metal and ligand since metal-ligand bonds from reversibly, polymers of this type might be crystallized by the kind of techniques used to prepare, e.g. quartz crystals from amorphous silica. Since the choice of metal-ligand combinations is virtually unlimited, the possibility of carrying out MO calculations for polymers that might help in picking suitable systems was also examined. Author
