AN ADVANCED HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOCOUPLE FOR USE ON AEROSPACE VEHICLES.
Abstract:
Thermocouple probes were fabricated using both WW-26Re and W-5ReW-26Re thermoelectric elements encased in 18 inch diameter W-26Re alloy sheaths. The probes were internally insulated with high purity thoria double bore tubing. Graded thoria-tungsten coatings were plasma sprayed externally on the sheaths for oxidation protection. Performance characteristics of these probes in thermal, oxidative and vibration environments were investigated. Results of tests demonstrated probes were capable of reliable service above 4500 F. Additional unsheathed WW-26Re and W-5ReW-26Re thermoelectric systems were evaluated with respect to sensitivity, stability, and e.m.f. output versus temperature up to 5200 F. Author
