Abstract:

Additional results of a parametric study of argon ion lasers are summarized and compared with previous data. The 3, 4, and 5 mm bore tubes demonstrate a consistent agreement in performance over a wide range of operating conditions. The variation with magnetic field of total output power and the power at the different wavelengths is described. The dependence of spontaneous emission on magnetic field indicates that the optimum magnetic field for maximum output power is not determined by plasma effects but rather by some combination of Zeeman splitting and Faraday rotation. Experiments with metal bore tubes are summarized. A marked dependence on the detailed shape and position in the magnetic field of the bore constriction has been observed. Sputtering has been further reduced by the use of tungsten in critical areas of the bore. Measurements of gas pumping indicate that although the effect is quite pronounced, it has surprisingly little influence on the laser output. Author
