HYDROSTATIC BEARING FEASIBILITY PROGRAM.

Abstract:

The feasibility of large hydrostatic journal and thrust bearings, once they have been pressurized, was established. Vastly improved theoretical relationships were also established for laminar and turbulent flow in the bearings. Computer programs were developed and used. The turbulent flow relationship is of major value to rocket engine turbopumps, since the bearings would operate in this flow regime. Confirming test performance data for all major aspects of fully pressurized hydrostatic bearing performance was obtained. This consisted of load carrying capacity, lubrication flow rate, lubrication temperature rise, lubricant film thickness, and bearing torque for both laminar and turbulent flow conditions. Test performance was in good agreement with predicted computer programs. Author
