THE COMBUSTION OF HYDROCARBONS AND FLUORO-SUBSTITUTED HYDROCARBONS WITH NITROGEN TRIFLUORIDE AND NITROGEN TRIFLUORIDE-OXYGEN MIXTURES,
Abstract:
The products of the reaction between n-butane and nitrogen trifluoride n-butane, nitrogen trifluoride, and oxygen vinylidene fluoride and oxygen hexafluoroethane, oxygen, and hydrogen have been studied. The gases were reacted in a calorimeter bomb and the products were analyzed with a mass spectrometer. Hydrogen fluoride was trapped on sodium fluoride fluorine on mercury. The results showed 1 that fluorine reacts preferentially with hydrogen to produce hydrogen fluoride 2 no C-F bonds are produced until there is more than enough fluorine to react with hydrogen and 3 comparison of adiabatic theoretical calculations with experimentally determined results indicates that shifting equilibrium is followed upon cooling the combustion products from the flame temperature down to about 1700 K.
