OPERATION CROSSROADS. EFFECTS OF AN ATOMIC BOMB EXPLOSION ON CORN SEEDS
Abstract:
The atomic bomb detonation at Bikini during Operation Crossroads offered the opportunity for exposing various biological materials including corn seed to ionizing radiation. This experiment with corn was designed to determine the effects of radiation from the atomic bomb in causing 1 alterations of the chromosome mechanism of heredity 2 direct injurious action on the plants grown from the treated seed and 3 sterility due to chromosomal derangement and other causes. For purposes of comparison duplicate samples of seed were exposed to measured dosages of X-rays ranging from 5,000 r to 25,000 r units. Author
