A BRIEF REVIEW OF SELECTED ASPECTS OF THE SAN BLAS CUNA INDIANS

Abstract:

This brief study is intended to provide a picture of the culture of the San Blas Cuna Indians living in the archipelago situated off the eastern Caribbean coast of the Republic of Panama, with particular reference to medical problems. The study should provide background information to military personnel responsible for military civic action programs designed to ameliorate unsatisfactory health conditions among the San Blas Indians. In addition to the San Blas Cuna on which this paper is primarily focused, certain socio-cultural aspects of the Bayano Cuna, one of the mainland Cuna tribes, are also discussed. This latter group has developed somewhat differently since they have by choice remained on the mainland rather than move to the islands for protection.
