Abstract:

This report covers testing of T58 Engines subjected to direct ingestion of sand and dust. Effect of dust ingestion on engine performance and mechanical integrity analyzed. Inlet separator evaluated. Evolution of suitable test equipment described. Performance deterioration alone is not an adequate criterion of engine deterioration resulting from dust ingestion. As the rate of dust increases, the effect on the engine per pound of dust decreases. The service life of compressor stator vanes is affected by dust ingestion. The separator provided effective inlet protection for the engine under the conditions of the test. Author
