COPES-VULCAN DIVISION BLAW-KNOX COMPANY MODEL D-4 ROTARY SOOT BLOWER HEAD,
Abstract:
The requirement that bidders on new boiler designs offer soot blower heads with integral, adjustable pressure control led to the development and evaluation of the Copes-Vulcan D-4 soot blower head. Tests were conducted to determine operability of the proposed design and to permit evaluation of modifications recommended as a result of initial test. Modifications were required to achieve correct range of head pressures, reduce torque necessary to operate the head, and to eliminate valve stem breakage. Production units of this design intended for DDG-15 were initially unsatisfactory due to inadequate control of head pressure so modified valve assemblies were provided. Later, a modified cam design and another design valve assembly were incorporated. Inadequate pressure control, which permitted pressure to surge, existed during the opening and closing phases of the blowing cycle, but the blower exhibited adequate control while the valve was at maximum opening. Because of the ease with which head pressures can be adjusted, this design is considered satisfactory for Naval use. Author
