RESEARCH AND REPORTS ON PHOTOCHROMIC MATERIALS WHICH MAY BE USED AS EYE PROTECTIVE DEVICES
Abstract:
Studies of the thermal switching properties 5,7-dichloro-6- nitroindolinobenzospiropyran are completed. Rate constants and equilibrium constants are obtained for all processes taking place in both ethanol and toluene over a temperature range from 0 C to 60 C. The thermo dynamic parameters for these processes are calculated. Phenmenological equations describing photochemical switching processes of this compound are derived and appear verified by experimental data. True quantum efficiencies for both opening and closing processes of the spiropyran ring obtained. The photochemical, thermal and spectral properties of seven other photochromic compounds are investigated in toluene solutions at 20 C. There appears to be a considerable variance in important parameters among the different compounds.
