GROWTH OF SINGLE CRYSTALS OF SILVER IN THE PRESENCE OF FINELY DIVIDED ALUMINA,
Abstract:
The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystals upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of twenty weight percent. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appears to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. Author
