NEW CATHODE-ANODE COUPLES USING NONAQUEOUS ELECTROLYTE
Abstract:
Properties of a Li-AgCl cell using nonaqueous electrolyte were studied, and sealed cells of 5-amp-hr nominal capacity fabricated and tested. Nonaqueous electrolytes were formed with AlCl3 and LiCl additions to propylene carbonate PC and nitromethane NM. A Ag-electrode study led to fabrication of Ag-AgCl-graphite pasted electrodes. Thin electrodes and use of mix low in AgCl led to increased utilization of the AgCl during discharge. Graphite was found to increase the the AgCl utilization in thick pasted electrodes. An increase in AgCl solubility was found in electrolyte with perchlorate salt added. Li electrodes are now produced by rolling Li sheet onto Ni screen in an Ar atmosphere. Li deposition occurs up to 100 efficiency in concentrated AlCl3-LiCi-NM solutions and AlCl3-LiCiPC solutions. An improved Li deposit was obtained from the NM system and from mixed solutions of PC and NM.
