Abstract:

This report covers the engineer design tests conducted to determine the feasibility of the Target Map Coordinate Locator Equipment to pro vide quantity storage of and rapid access to map information and accurate determination of map coordinates. This equipment was designed to rapidly select, automatically, any one of 11,000 different microfilmed transparencies of maps or photomaps stored in a single drum. The selected transparency is projected to full size, and a crosswire measuring system provides indices to determine coordinates of selected points on the map. Report concludes that a The Target Map Coordinate Locator makes possible the quality storage of microfilmed topographic maps or photomaps, rapid access to map information, and speedy and accurate determination of map coordinates b the Target Map Coordinate Locator in its present configuration does not have the degree of reliability that is desirable in a piece of military equipment intended for field use the results of the engineer design tests indicate that further improvements in design are necessary to increase the reliability of this equipment.
