Abstract:

This report describes the development of a prototype radar altimeter to FAA specifications for use as the altitude data input for an automatic landing system. This prototype, employs techniques new to the field of altimetry including 1 Nanosecond pulses 2 Zero frequency i-f 3 Unbalanced leading-edge tracking 4 Gated automatic gain control. Accuracy is in the range of 1.5 feet from zero altitude to 100 feet, and 6 feet to 12 feet at altitudes from 200 feet to 500 feet. An altitude rate output is furnished in addition to the altitude output. The report discusses altimeter design, capabilities and limitations, compatibility with autopilot and control systems, methods of test, calibration and maintenance, and the test program used for proving the efficacy of the altimeter. The analysis of interference potential and the results of RFI testing are discussed. The extensive reliability program is described and data and analyses are presented, including the computation of total mission success probability of 0.998100 based upon operational experience. This report reveals that all operational requirements of the specification were met or exceeded in this development. Author
