Abstract:

The absorption spectrum of long path lengths of gaseous Ammonia pressurized with Nitrogen was measured between 20 and 30 microns. A theoretical spectrum was constructed using data obtained by other investigators at shorter wavelengths. This theoretical spectrum was verified by comparison to the measured spectrum. The absence of absorption in this region due to the wings of the strong pure rotation lines located at longer wavelengths led to the conclusion that the absorption coefficient far out in the wings of these lines decreases more rapidly than that predicted by the Lorentz line shape. The selfbroadening coefficient of Ammonia relative to Nitrogen was determined and used to construct a set of absorption functions for Ammonia in this region. The set of absorption functions in turn yielded a generalized absorption curve for the region. Author
