IMPROVED ENERGY-DISSIPATOR.
Abstract:
A study was made of a limited number of basic energy dissipation methods in order to design an improved energy dissipator. Virtually all of the methods considered utilized plastic strain as the means of dissipation. A survey approach was taken to compare these methods with paper honeycomb dissipators on the basis of cost and weight per unit of energy dissipated. This study indicated that dissipators which required load distribution plates did not compare ffavorably with paper honeycomb. Mild steel honeycomb exhibited a low enough crushing stress to eliminate the need for load distribution plates, and appeared to be the most promising dissipation method considered. Accordingly, effort was directed toward further development of that honeycomb. Author
