Abstract:

Twenty-eight pounds of amorphous BeH2 was produced by batch pyrolysis for use in Air Force propellant research programs. Part of this production consisted of the highest purity BeH2 98 ever manufactured. Target specifications were met with all production. Technical effort to improve the continuous pyrolysis process was only partially successful. In the laboratory program the sedimentation volume test continued to show promise as a method for predicting propellant processability. A technique, which consisted of pressure-fusion and grinding either batch-produced or continuous amorphous BeH2, was found to significantly increase its bulk density and improve the product propellant mix viscosity. Forty-eight pounds of crystalline BeH2 was produced successfully by the hydrostatic compaction technique. Analyses are incomplete but the purity of all the product appears to meet the target specification of 90 or - 2 BeH2.
