Abstract:

A process for the continuous production of N2F4 by the oxidation of HNF2 by aqueous ferric ions was demonstrated on a pilot plant scale. The reactions were carried out at low pressures 5 to 15 psig and moderate temperatures 70 to 220 F, which facilitated system design and operation. Purification of the product was accomplished without cryogenic fractionation. With the exception of fluorine, all raw materials were available and relatively cheap. Production rates of 1.8 lbhr with 98.5 pure N2F4 were routine. Scale- up of this process to much higher production rates appears to be safe and technically feasible.
