Abstract:

A bench-scale continuous, pyrolysis unit for production of BeH2 was designed and fabricated. The unit was operated under varying conditions of temperature, pressure, flow rate and reactor configuration. Chemical analysis of the product showed that the BeH2 produced was low in purity 23-56 wt BeH2. The major contaminant was oxide 32-70 wt as BeO, which probably arose from ether cleavage reactions. Compatibility tests showed that BeH2 did not react with a number of alcohols at 100 C. The treatments often passivated the BeH2 to attack by boiling water. Branched amyl alcohols were most effective. Be ions were found to induce hydrolysis of passivated BeH2. Air adsorption measurements indicated that BeH2 adsorbs less than 2 cc air per 100 g at 50 mm. Post-treatment of dense BeH2 with propionic acid improved its purity and diminished its reactivity with boiling water. Author
