Abstract:

With the exception of Searchlights and far Infrared Red devices Penrod, Corps of Engineers Equipment will probably withstand the effect of an air burst of an atomic bomb of present design at a distnace of 1000 yards. Improved resistance to blast can be provided by shock-mounting, shielding, and strengthening more fragile parts of equipment. Similarly, resistance to radiant heat can be provided by covering shielding, or by substitution of more heat-resistant materials. Lateral protection by employment of natural terrain or construction of revetments will reduce the radius of damage materially. The destruction of Corps of Engineers Equipment by use of an atomic bomb does not appear to be a profitable use of the bomb. Author
