Abstract:

Results of a followup procedure which obtained long-term information on 152 ears which had experienced stapes mobilization surgery are reviewed. Results show that approximately one year after surgery, 50 of the cases maintained at least a 25 improvement in hearing. Over one third of the ears maintained a 25 improvement for 3 years or longer. Preoperation hearing level, amount of improvement immediately after surgery, and sex of the patient were found to be unrelated to percent of hearing improvement. However, older patients maintained proportionately greater improvement in hearing for at least three years. Finally, there was a strong tendency for the operation to be more successful when surgery was required on only one ear than in instances when it was required on both ears. Author
