Abstract:

This report includes Michigan U. Coll. of Engineering, Ann Arbor. COMPARATIVE MACHINABILITY OF MBMC-1 AND AISI 4130 STEEL. Final rept., by L. V. Colwell and K. N. Sederlund. Oct 60, 1v. incl. illus. tables. Subcontract to Ingersoll Kalamazoo Div., BorgWarner Corp., Mich, Contract NOrd-17519An ultra high strength steel suitable for the fabrication of missile cases and components was investigated. An evaluation was made on fabrication of hydrotest cases by both rolled and welded, and hydrospin processes, and was limited to the machinability, metallurgy, welding, spinability and hydrotesting of M MC 1, a high Si lean alloy steel. Physical and mechanical properties of MBMC 1 steel are presented. A machinability study was completed comparing MBMC 1 steel with AISI 4130 steel. Fifty-five production prototype hydrotest cases were fabricated 23 by the conventional rolled and welded process, and 32 by the power spinning process. The test proved that the material, with proper heat treatment, can produce a high strength steel case by the rolled and welded or hydrospun metho s of fabrication.
