CURRENT REVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF FURFUROLE-ACETONE RESINS IN THE USSR
Abstract:
FURFUROLE-ACETONE RESINS CAN BE USED AS BINDING AGENTS FOR CONCRETE AND AS IMPREGNATING AGENTS FOR WOOD. The resins display good mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties required amounts of furfurole could be supplied by hydrolysis of vegetable waste. An attempt was made to increase the heat resistance of furfuroleacetone resins by introducing boron into the structure by condensation of furfurole with boron-containing esters of diacetone alcohol. Resins stable to 400 C were produced. Investigation of the resin-forming process indicated that the actual condensation of the double bonded C group of furfurole with the methyl group of acetone takes place under formation of water and that double bonds of the furan ring are not involved. The process of condensation can be conducted either in alkaline or acid media. In alkaline media, soluble and fusible resins are obtained in acid media, case-hardenable resins are produced, which are insolubdisplay considerable thermal stability. Author
