TEST OF MK 77 MOD 0 BOMB (FIRE-750 LBS) WITH CANTED FINS

Abstract:

Tests were conducted on the Mk 77 Mod O bomb, which was inert l oaded and equipped with inert M23 igniters, inert M173 fuzes, and canted fins, to determine its over-all effectiveness when dropped from 3500 ft in horizontal and dive attitudes. Fit, flight, and aircraft drop tests are described. Results indicate that the Mk 77 Mod O bomb with canted fins cannot be used by F4U squadrons operating at sea because of fit problems. The effect of bomb spin on vane action may be such as to prevent arming.
