A FURTHER STUDY ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE JET STREAM AND CYCLONE FORMATION

Abstract:

A study of the relations between the upper atmospheric structures and cyclogenesis was made by considering conditions over the US during the period Nov. 12 to 14, 1951. Surface events, the thermal structure of the middle troposphere, the jet-stream structure, the advection of vorticity, the distribution of vertical motion, and cross-stream circulation were examined. Frontagenesis, cylcogenesis, and a spread of precipitation occurred in the left- hand portion of the area downstream from the speed maximum in the jet stream. Changes in a nearby cold dome are considered a means of forecasting cylcogenesis.
