THE HYDRODYNAMICS OF UNDERWATER JET PROPULSION
Abstract:
Force measurements were obtained with a new sensitive balance for a range of nose shapes and cavitation parameters K under conditions of open- cavity flow. Drag-coefficient CD data were obtained for a 12- to 25-ftsec range on model sizes ranging from 0.500 to 1.414 in. in diameter for the sharper cone. The experiments indicate a remarkable consistency and a close check with the theory. Two exceptions were noted flow discrepancies, about sharphy pointed cones, with those indicated by the approximate cavity-drag theory of Plesset and Shaffer and definite slope differences which increase with decreasing cone angle of the experimental curve with the line given by CDCDO1 K.
