Abstract:

This research endeavors to elucidate the effect of monomer structures (rings, alkanes, etc.) and related functionality on the reversibility of covalent bonds within novel thiol-anhydride thermoset polymeric networks (dynamic covalent polymers), which represent a potentially paradigm-shifting, fully re-processable class of materials (Figure 1). Current drawbacks to these polymers include performance degradation issues, tackiness, and low thermal tolerance due to the need for a large number of unreacted monomers to balance the chemical equilibrium of the reaction in favor of practical reversibility.
