Title:
The Impact of Desiccation and Freezing on Gamma Radiation Survival in Microorganisms
Report Date:
2020-03-19
Abstract:
Gamma radiation and desiccation cause oxidative stress in microorganisms, mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by abiotic and metabolic mechanisms. During irradiation, ROS are produced in cells by water radiolysis; during desiccation, by exposure to atmospheric oxygen and dysfunctional metabolic processes. Bacteria and yeasts that are radiation-resistant are typically also desiccation-resistant and share a great antioxidant capacity.
