Abstract:

Two-photon resonant, difference frequency four wave mixing using the 5p sub 12 JO level in krypton has been performed to generate tunable VUV radiation for photoabsorption measurements of oxygen resonances in the 1200 - 1300A region. This has yielded the highest resolution spectra to date. Striking differences in the appearance of rotational structure between the isotopic species are observed, in some cases for the first time. Previous VUV high resolution absorption and photo-dissociation studies of molecular oxygen in our laboratory have used stimulated anti-Stokes Raman scattering to produce tunable VUV radiation. However, such studies are limited in practice by low conversion efficiencies to wavelengths 1500A i.e. the Schumann-Runge band and continuum region. In the present work, use is made of the versatility of four-wave difference-frequency mixing in krypton to generate radiation over a more extensive range of VUV wavelengths down to the LiF window cutoff 1050A.
