Abstract:

ADAS is a remotely-deployed self-tensioning, horizontal-line acoustic array sonobuoy. The SPRAY hardware used to evaluate the operation of such a concept was fabricated by Sanders Associates, Inc. and is designed for over-the- side automatic deployment with VHF relay of the multiplexed array data. The report describes the results of acoustic testing of the ADASSPRAY array during Bearing Stake exercises in the Indian Ocean, January thru March, 1977. Data collected cover three mid-to-deep water sites in the zero to 1860 meter deficiency range. Array gain, beamwidth and signal gain are compared to theoretical predictions and to results of the earlier MINYAKA tests, which included both deeper 740 meter depth excess and very shallow 180 meters water. Predictions based on measured data indicate detection ranges in excess of 100 NM for the deeper Indian Ocean sites less than 1200 meter depth deficiency against the postulated third-generation Soviet threat. Array performance falls between the extreme conditions experienced in the MINYAKA tests.
