Title:
The Effect of External Shape Upon the Drag of a Scoop
Corporate Author:
NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR AERONAUTICS LANGLEY FIELD VA LANGLEY AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY
Report Date:
1947-07-01
Abstract:
An investigation was undertaken to determine the cost of scoop installation on which principles of NACA cowling had been applied. These principles include nose shape of sufficient curvature to prevent breakaway over lip of duct and entrance large enough to insure small expansion loss. Several designs of ducts are presented in which nose and afterbody shapes were varied. Apparatus and tests are briefly described and results tabulated. A method of obtaining optimum scoop dimensions is also developed.
