Title:
Improved Fatigue Life Bearing Development
Corporate Author:
GENERAL ELECTRIC CO CINCINNATI OH AIRCRAFT ENGINE BUSINESS GROUP
Report Date:
1989-06-01
Abstract:
This report describes a program to developevaluate a rolling-element bearing material that has a fatigue life of three-to-five such extended-life material will be primarily in advanced, high-speed engines, it was also essential to demonstrate adequate fracture toughness to preclude race fracture at the high expected DN levels. Improved corrosion resistance relative to M50 was another desirable feature of this advanced bearing material. The program consisted of three phases. Phase I was a basic technology study. In Phase II, full-scale bearing component testing and evaluation were carried out. Phase III, a mid-contract amendment, was designed to evaluate the fracture toughness KIc of several advanced, high performance, high-temperature bearing steels over a temperature range of -65 to 400F.
